Gum Contouring

Gingivectomy or Gum Contouring

A gum lift, gum contouring or gingivectomy procedure involves gently removing excess gum tissue by contouring and shaping the “gummy” section of your smile. The dentist will sculpt the gum level to remove the gummy part and reshape the smile.
The result is a much bigger, whiter, and more gorgeous smile.
This procedure is also very often used in combination with a smile makeover using porcelain veneers. The gum lift helps to ensure symmetry and smoothness to the overall smile result.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What Causes A Gummy Smile?

When too much gum tissue grows down and starts to cover the teeth, the smile appearance can become too gummy and the teeth appear smaller. This often happens while wearing braces, because of hormone changes, or as a side effect of medication. Your smile is made up of more than just teeth. All the aspects of a smile should be in balance and harmony for the smile to be at its best. One of the most overlooked and misunderstood part of the smile is the gums.

Are There Limitations To A Gum Lift Or Contouring?

The limitations in a gum lift procedure have to do with just how much sculpting we can do. There is a certain amount of gum tissue needed around your teeth in order to have a healthy tooth-gum balance. This measurement is called the biologic width. If you have a gummy smile that can not be improved with the basic instruments alone, there are other options available. The best way to find out if we can fix your gummy smile is to schedule a consultation appointment with us.

At this appointment we will take digital photos and if necessary, impressions too. In order for us to make a treatment plan and discuss it afterwards with you. We will also take measurements of your gums to find out how we can best achieve the results you desire. Some of our beautiful smile results are accomplished with this simple, conservative and gentle procedure.
